About this product
Conventional Trolling Fishing Rod – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.
Stand-up big-game fishing is a specific discipline: no fighting chair, no gimbal socket on the gunwale, just a harness, a belt and your own legs and back against a fish that may take an hour. The rod has to be built for that – short enough to give the fish minimal leverage, strong enough to carry a hard drag setting indefinitely, and forgiving enough that a sudden run does not break it or the angler.
The NMT601-80 uses a graphite and E-glass composite blank with what Noeby call a flex-reinforcement process. The logic is the same as on their full-glass rods but taken a step further: glass absorbs the shock of a strike and a sudden run, graphite adds stiffness so the rod lifts rather than just bends, and the reinforcement keeps the blank from taking a permanent set under sustained load.
The guides are spiral-wrapped, which is worth understanding. On a conventional overhead rod the guides sit on top, and under heavy load the line tries to twist the blank. A spiral wrap rotates the guide train through 180 degrees along the rod so the line finishes underneath, where the load pulls the blank straight down instead of sideways. It is a standard solution on serious stand-up rods and it makes a real difference in a long fight.
The reel seat is aluminium alloy rather than graphite – at 80 lb drag settings, plastic seats crack – and the grips are non-slip EVA. Off this coast the rod is aimed squarely at yellowfin and dogtooth tuna, shark, big grouper and the offshore banks, whether trolling, chunking or jigging.
