Field points are the blunt steel tips used for target and practice shooting. They screw into the insert glued in the end of the arrow, and they are consumable – they blunt, they mushroom, and above all they unscrew themselves and get lost.

That last one catches everyone. The vibration of repeated shots slowly backs a point out of its thread, and eventually it stays behind in the target or drops into the grass. The first sign is usually an arrow that flies strangely, or one that comes out of the foam with a bare insert. Keeping a few spares with your kit is the difference between carrying on and packing up.

Weight consistency matters more than it sounds. The point sits at the very front of the arrow, so its weight has a large effect on where the arrow balances and how it flies. Mixing a heavier point into a set of matched arrows puts one arrow outside the group for no visible reason. Replace points as a matched set where you can, and keep the weight the same as what came off.

A field point has a parallel shoulder rather than a taper, which is what lets an arrow pull back out of a foam target. That shape also means field points are for targets only – they are not hunting heads and will not do the job of a broadhead.

A drop of beeswax or a smear of thread-lock on the thread slows the unscrewing problem considerably, and costs nothing.

Will these fit my arrows?

They use the standard screw-in thread that fits a normal arrow insert. Tell us the arrows you shoot and we will confirm before you order - the thread is standard but point weights vary, and matching the weight matters.

Why do my points keep coming loose?
