The most important thing to say is that a crossbow bolt is not a short arrow. It is thicker, much stiffer and far shorter, because a crossbow puts an enormous amount of energy into it over a very short power stroke. Shooting a bolt from a vertical bow does not work, and shooting an arrow from a crossbow is dangerous – it will flex and can fail on the rail. Buy bolts for a crossbow and arrows for a bow.
The 53 cm length and 8.8 mm diameter are the common class most crossbows are built around, but always check the length your crossbow specifies. A bolt shorter than the manufacturer states can fail to clear the rail properly, and a longer one throws the balance off.
Mixed carbon is a sensible middle: stiffer and tougher than plain fibreglass, and unlike aluminium it does not take a permanent bend from a hard target hit. Check each bolt before you shoot it – flex it gently, look for splits or crushed sections at the nock end, and discard anything damaged. A failing bolt on a crossbow rail is a serious matter, because of how much energy is behind it.
Never dry-fire a crossbow – releasing it with no bolt on the rail sends all that energy into the limbs instead and will destroy the bow, sometimes violently. It is the single commonest way crossbows are wrecked.
