These are 6 mm fibreglass practice arrows, 31.5 inches (800 mm) long with plastic vanes and a weight of about 30 g each. They are the standard club and school practice arrow, and they exist because of one simple fact: people learning archery lose and break arrows.
A beginner shoots over the target, into long grass, into the side of a foam block at an angle that snaps the shaft, and into the arrow already sitting in the gold. Doing that with carbon arrows is expensive. Doing it with fibreglass is not, which is why almost every club teaches on them.
Fibreglass is also forgiving of neglect in a way carbon is not. It does not crack invisibly, it does not splinter dangerously on release, and it does not need the careful inspection a carbon shaft demands. Left in a damp bag or dropped on concrete, it is still the same arrow.
The trade is weight and speed. At around 30 g a fibreglass arrow is heavier than a carbon one of the same length, so it flies slower and drops more at distance. For practice inside 20 metres, which is where beginners shoot, that costs nothing. For competition or hunting, it is the wrong arrow.
Plastic vanes rather than natural feathers is the right choice in this climate. Feathers matt down in rain and in wet grass and need drying and re-setting; moulded vanes simply do not care.
