In deep sand on a Tanzanian coast track, or in black cotton mud after rain, a stuck vehicle usually has one problem: the tyres are spinning against something that will not grip. Recovery boards solve that directly. You dig a little in front of the tyre, wedge a board in, and drive out – no second vehicle, no winch point, no waiting.
MAXTRAX MKII are the boards most overlanders converge on, and the reason is the cleat pattern. The cleats have to grip the tyre and the ground at the same time; get that balance wrong and the board either shoots out backwards or the tyre polishes it smooth. These do both jobs, which is why they have the reputation they have.
They are moulded in UV-stabilised reinforced nylon – flexible enough to conform to uneven ground, tough enough to be driven over repeatedly, and stable in sun that destroys ordinary plastic within a season here. There are six integrated handles on each board for carrying and positioning, and the board’s edge works as a shovel when you need to clear sand from around a buried wheel and have not brought a spade.
They are supplied as a pair with two leashes, in high-visibility orange – which is not vanity. A board flicked backwards and half-buried in sand is remarkably easy to drive away from. They stack and nest for storage, and mount to a Slimline II rack with the Front Runner side brackets, which we stock alongside them.
