About this product

A hard shell opens faster; a soft shell gives you more room. This one opens to 240 x 190 cm of floor with 126 cm of height – four and a half square metres, enough for two to four people with space to sit up and change rather than shuffling on a mattress.

The reason it can be that big is the fold-out design. Half the tent extends beyond the side of the vehicle, supported by the ladder, so the floor is not limited to the footprint of your roof rack. The cost is a couple of extra minutes at setup – undo the PVC cover, fold the tent out, set the ladder and put the poles in the window awnings.

Materials are the same as the hard-shell tents: 280 g polycotton ripstop canvas rated to 2,000 mm for the body, with a 420D ripstop polyoxford fly rated to 3,000 mm over it. Canvas is what keeps a tent breathable on a humid coastal night, and it is worth having whichever style of tent you choose. A high-density sponge mattress is fitted, and the aluminium telescopic ladder comes in a 2 m or 2.3 m length.

The frame is lightweight aluminium, and it packs away under a heavy-duty 600 g black PVC cover. For anyone who camps for several nights in one place rather than moving every day, the extra space is worth more than the extra two minutes – which is exactly the trade this tent is offering.

Good to know

Will it fit my vehicle?

A rooftop tent mounts to roof rack crossbars or a rack tray, not to the roof panel, so what matters is your rack and its load rating rather than the badge on the car. Send us a photograph of your roof setup and its rated capacity and we will tell you honestly whether it will work - and if it will not, we will say so.

What about dynamic and static load ratings?

Your rack has a dynamic rating for driving and a higher static rating for standing still. The tent's weight must sit inside the dynamic figure; the tent plus the people sleeping in it sits inside the static figure. Ask us and we will weigh the tent and work it through with you before you buy.

How does it compare with a hard-shell tent?

More floor space for the money, because it folds out beyond the vehicle. A hard shell opens in about a minute and drives lower and quieter. Choose this if you stay put for a few nights, a hard shell if you move camp daily.

How long does setup take?

A few minutes - undo the cover, fold the tent out, set the ladder and fit the awning poles. Closing takes a little longer, since the canvas has to be tucked in before the cover goes on.

Does it really sleep four?

Two adults and two children comfortably. Four adults fit but at close quarters. The 240 x 190 cm floor is generous for two with room for gear.

Will it be damp inside on a humid night?

Much less than an all-synthetic tent - the 280 g polycotton canvas breathes. Open the vents before sleeping and condensation stays manageable.

Is sleeping on the roof actually better in Tanzania?

It is why they are popular here. You are off the ground and away from insects, water running through a camp site and anything walking past, you get a breeze on a hot night, and you can pitch on ground too rough or wet for a normal tent - a stony riverbed, a muddy patch, a roadside.

Does the ladder take the weight of the overhang?

Yes, the ladder supports the folded-out half of the tent as well as being the way up. Set it on firm, level ground and check the angle before anyone climbs.

How much does it weigh?

The supplier does not publish a weight. Ask us and we will weigh it in Dar es Salaam so you can check it against your rack's rating before ordering.
