About this product

Most soft plastics need to be moving to work. A paddle tail is dead in the water the moment you stop winding. A long, thin, very soft body is different – it responds to current, to the lift of a swell, to the smallest twitch of the rod tip. Leave it lying on the bottom and it is still wriggling.

That is why bug and worm shapes catch fish that ignore other baits, particularly on a slow day and in cold or still conditions. The technique that suits them is also different: instead of a steady retrieve, you drag, hop or shake the bait along the bottom with long pauses, and let the plastic do the rest.

At 9 cm this is a substantial bait with a lot of length but very little weight, so it needs a light jig head or a Texas rig to fish it properly – a heavy head will drag it along dead. CRONY list it for bass, trout and perch, and it works in salt as well.

Around Dar es Salaam it will take snapper, grunter, grouper and queenfish worked slowly along the bottom from a jetty, a creek mouth or the rocks. Inland it is a bass, tilapia and catfish bait for the lakes, dams and rivers.

How should I fish a noodle bug?

Slowly, along the bottom. Drag it, hop it, or shake it in place with long pauses between movements. Do not wind it steadily - the whole value of the shape is what it does when you are not moving it.

How do I rig it?

On a jig head, nose first, threaded along the body with the point out through the back so the bait sits straight. A crooked soft plastic spins and twists your line. Texas and drop-shot rigs also work. Jig heads are sold separately.

What jig head weight suits it?

Light - just enough to reach the bottom and stay there. A heavy head drags a soft body along dead instead of letting it wriggle. Texas rigging with a small bullet weight is often better still.
