A stickbait has no lip, which means everything it does comes from its shape, its weight and what you do with the rod tip. Sinking stickbaits like this one are the more versatile kind: they can be skipped across the surface, twitched just under it, or counted down and worked through the water column, which is what you want when fish are showing but not committing on top.

The casting is the other half of the argument. An internal weight slides to the tail as the lure leaves the rod, which stabilises the flight and stops it tumbling, then returns forward as the lure lands so it swims correctly. Combined with a streamlined profile, that is what gets a lure out past a reef edge in a crosswind.

Is it 34 g or 62 g?

We cannot settle it and we would rather say so. Our supplier gives approximately 34 g for the 150 mm; Noeby own country site publishes 62 g for the same size. That is too big a gap to guess at. Ask us and we will put the actual lure on the scales before you buy.

How do I fish a sinking stickbait?

Three ways. Skipped across the surface with a fast, rhythmic rod-tip action; twitched just under the surface with pauses; or counted down and worked with long sweeps. The pause is where most bites come.

What will take it around Dar es Salaam?

Kingfish, GT, queenfish, barracuda, tuna and snapper, cast over reef edges and drop-offs, around bait schools, and off the rocks. It is a proper saltwater lure, not a light-tackle one.

Why is it called the Instigator?

That name, and the NS130 colour reference, come from the trade rather than from Noeby, who publish this lure simply as the 9493. We have kept the name because that is what people ask for, and noted the factory code so you can match it.

What knot should I use?

A loop knot, or a snap to the split ring, so the lure can swing freely. A tight knot snugged onto the tow eye kills the action.

Should I upgrade the hooks and split rings?

On a stickbait that may meet a GT, yes. Noeby do not publish the hook brand or size fitted, and the hooks and rings are the cheapest part of the outfit to replace. Ask us what suits.

Does the pink colour work here?

Pink is a surprisingly consistent performer in bright equatorial sun and clear water, particularly for tuna and kingfish. It is not a gimmick colour. Carry a natural pattern as well and change if you are not getting hits.

How do I look after it?

Rinse in fresh water after every trip and dry the lure, hooks especially, before it goes back in the box. Salt left on trebles rusts them within days here, and a blunt or rusty point does not set.
