About this product

A spinner is a blade on a wire that spins around a weighted body. The spinning blade does two things at once – it flashes, and it puts out a steady vibration that a fish detects with its lateral line well before it can see the lure. That combination is why spinners are so effective in coloured water and around dawn and dusk.

This is the heaviest of the three FISHKING spinners we stock at 22.5 g, and weight is what it buys you: casting distance into wind, and the ability to get down and stay down in a current or in deeper water. A light spinner in a running tide simply skates along the surface.

Fishing it could not be simpler – cast, and wind back just fast enough to feel the blade turning through the rod tip. Slow down until the blade is only just spinning and you will fish deeper; speed up to bring it higher.

Around Dar es Salaam spinners take queenfish, barracuda, small kingfish and trevally off the rocks, jetties and beaches. Inland they are excellent for tigerfish, Nile perch, bass and catfish on the lakes and rivers.

One note on the size marking. This lure is described as size 3 at 22.5 g, while the size 5 in the same range is listed at 15 g. Those two do not sit together on any standard spinner sizing, so treat the weight as the reliable figure and the size number as a supplier code. We have raised it with them.

Good to know

Why does the size marking not match the weight?

It does not sit with the rest of the range either - this lure is marked size 3 at 22.5 g while the size 5 in the same range is 15 g. On any standard spinner sizing that is the wrong way round. Treat the weight as the reliable figure and the size number as a supplier code. We have queried it with them.

How do I fish a spinner?

Cast and wind back just fast enough to feel the blade turning in the rod tip. Wind slower and it runs deeper; faster and it rises. That is the whole technique, which is why spinners are such a good lure to learn on.

Which of the three weights should I buy?

7.4 g for calm water and light tackle; 15 g as a general purpose size; this 22.5 g for distance into wind and for depth in a current. If you fish the rocks or a running tide, take the heaviest.

What will it catch around Dar es Salaam?

Queenfish, barracuda, small kingfish and trevally off the rocks, jetties and beaches. Inland it is excellent on tigerfish, Nile perch, bass and catfish.

Do I need a wire trace?

If barracuda are about, yes - they will bite through mono or fluorocarbon in one go. A short single-strand wire trace solves it. We stock it.

Why does a spinner twist my line?

Because the blade rotation transmits down the line. Always fit a good ball-bearing swivel between your main line and the leader when fishing spinners, or you will end up with a spool full of coils.

Is the treble hook good enough?

For the fish this lure is aimed at, yes. Check the points with a thumbnail before each session - spinners get fished around rock and the points blunt quickly. A blunt hook is the commonest reason for dropped fish.

How do I look after it?

Rinse in fresh water and dry it after every trip, particularly the blade clevis - salt seizing the clevis is what stops a spinner spinning. A drop of light oil on the pivot keeps it turning freely.
