About this product

The curled grub tail is one of the great pieces of lure design. The shape means water pressure makes it beat and roll from almost a standstill, so a grub works at speeds where a paddle-tail or a hard lure would be dead in the water. That is why they catch fish in cold water, on a slow day, and when a bait needs to be crawled along the bottom.

At 80 mm and 4.2 g this is a compact bait that suits a light jig head and light tackle. Bright yellow is a deliberately high-visibility colour: it shows up in stained water, at dawn and dusk, and under cloud, where a natural finish disappears.

Rig it on a jig head, nose first, with the point coming out through the back so the bait sits straight and the tail curls downward or to one side. Cast, let it sink, then a slow retrieve with occasional lifts. Most takes come as the bait falls.

Around Dar es Salaam it works from jetties, creek mouths and the rocks for queenfish, snapper, small trevally and grunter. Inland it is a very good tilapia, bass and small Nile perch bait, and grubs are the standard tail to add behind a jig head for almost any species.

Why is a curl tail better than a straight one?

Because it works at almost any speed. The curled shape catches water and beats from a near standstill, so you can crawl the bait along the bottom and it is still moving. A straight or paddle tail needs speed to do anything.

Does a jig head come with it?

No - this is an unrigged soft plastic. Jig heads are sold separately and we stock a range of weights. Tell us where you fish and we will match the weight.

How do I rig it?

Nose first onto the jig head, threaded along the body, with the point out through the back so the bait sits straight. Orient the tail curl downward or to the side, not upward, so the bait swims level.

Why bright yellow?

Visibility. Yellow shows in stained water, in low light and under cloud, where a natural translucent colour disappears. In clear water and bright sun a natural pattern is usually better, so carry both.

What will it catch around Dar es Salaam?

Queenfish, snapper, small trevally and grunter from jetties, creek mouths and rocks. Inland, tilapia, bass and small Nile perch. Grubs are also the standard trailer behind a jig or spinnerbait.

How should I retrieve it?

Slowly, with occasional lifts of the rod tip so the bait rises and falls. Most takes come on the drop - watch the line, and strike if it stops sinking or moves sideways.
