Highlights

Legs that actually spin

Twin propeller legs turn as the lure is pulled, chopping the surface into a bubble trail. It is far noisier than a plain frog - which is the point in weedy, coloured water.

Double propeller legs

Spinning blades where the back legs would be, throwing splash and bubbles on every turn.

Two weights

13.6 g and 16.6 g, for different casting distances and retrieve speeds.

Soft silicone body

Collapses on the strike so the hook points come free and set.

Surface commotion

Much louder than a plain frog, which finds fish in weedy or coloured water.

Product description

About this product

Lure Double Propeller Legs – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

A plain frog is a quiet lure – it kicks and wakes but does not make much noise. This one is the opposite. Where the back legs would be sit two small propeller blades, and as you pull the lure they spin, chopping the surface and leaving a trail of bubbles and splash behind. In weedy or coloured water, where a fish may not see a lure until it is close, that noise is what brings it up.

The body is soft silicone, which is what allows the hook points to lie tucked against it while the lure crosses weed and pads. When a fish clamps down the body squashes flat, the points come clear, and the hook sets.

It is made in 13.6 g and 16.6 g. Both cast well for a topwater lure – the extra weight of the propellers helps – and both work on a steady retrieve, which is the simplest way to fish a propeller frog: just wind, and keep the blades turning.

In Tanzania this is an inland lure for the weedy margins of lakes, dams and rivers: bass, catfish, tigerfish and Nile perch. As with any frog, the strike is the part to get right – wait until you feel weight on the line, not the splash, then sweep the rod hard.

Questions

Good to know

What do the propeller legs do?

They spin as the lure is pulled, chopping the surface and leaving a trail of bubbles and splash. It makes the lure far noisier than a plain frog, which helps fish find it in weedy or coloured water.

How do I fish it?

Mostly a steady retrieve - just fast enough to keep the blades turning. Pause it in gaps and holes in the weed, and give it a twitch before starting again; those pauses draw a lot of strikes.

When do I set the hook?

When you feel the weight of the fish, not at the splash. Striking at the sound pulls the lure out of the fish mouth. Wait, then sweep the rod hard and keep winding.

13.6 g or 16.6 g?

The heavier one casts further and pushes more water, which suits open water and wind. The lighter one lands more softly and suits tight, calm spots. Most people who fish frogs regularly own both.

What tackle do I need?

A medium-heavy rod with backbone and braided line. You need the power to pull a fish out of weed immediately and braid to cut through it. Straight braid, no leader, is the norm.

Where does it work in Tanzania?

The weedy margins of the lakes, dams and rivers - bass, catfish, tigerfish and Nile perch. It is an inland lure; there is little surface vegetation on the open coast.

Do the propellers get fouled?

In very thick weed, occasionally - a strand can wrap a blade and stop it turning. Flick the rod to clear it, and check the blades are spinning freely before each cast.

How do I look after it?

Rinse, squeeze out any water, dry it before storing, and check the hook points and the blade pivots. A blade that no longer spins freely has lost most of the lure value.
