About this product

Size matters more with spinners than with almost any other lure, and smaller is often better. In calm, clear water a big spinner lands with a slap and spins with more disturbance than a wary fish wants. A 7.4 g spinner lands softly, spins tightly, and looks much more like the small baitfish and insects most fish are actually eating.

It also casts properly on the tackle most people own: a 2500 to 3000 size spinning reel on a light rod. Trying to throw a 7 g lure on a heavy outfit is what makes people think small lures do not cast.

Fishing it is straightforward. Cast, and wind back just fast enough to feel the blade turning in the rod tip. Wind slower to run deeper, faster to bring it up. Occasional pauses let the lure flutter, which draws following fish.

In Tanzania this is mostly an inland lure – tilapia, bass, small tigerfish and perch on the lakes, dams and rivers – and it works inshore off jetties and creek mouths for small queenfish, mullet and snapper.

Which of the three weights should I buy?

This 7.4 g for calm water, clear conditions and light tackle; 15 g as a general-purpose size; 22.5 g for distance into wind and depth in a current. Smaller spinners usually out-fish larger ones in clear, calm water.

Why does the size marking not match the weight?

The three FISHKING spinners we stock are marked size 3 at 7.4 g, size 3 at 22.5 g and size 5 at 15 g. Those do not sit together on any standard spinner sizing. Treat the weight as the reliable figure and the size number as a supplier code. We have queried it with them.

How do I fish a spinner?

Cast and wind back just fast enough to feel the blade turning in the rod tip. Slower runs deeper, faster runs shallower. Add occasional pauses so the lure flutters - that often triggers a following fish.

What tackle does it need?

A light rod and a 2500 to 3000 size reel with light braid or 8-12 lb mono. On heavy tackle a 7 g lure will not cast properly, which is why people wrongly conclude small spinners do not work.

What will it catch in Tanzania?

Inland, tilapia, bass, small tigerfish and perch on the lakes, dams and rivers. Inshore, small queenfish, mullet and snapper from jetties and creek mouths.

Why does a spinner twist my line?

Because the blade rotation transmits down the line. Always fit a good ball-bearing swivel between your main line and the leader when fishing spinners, or you will end up with a spool full of coils.

Do I need a wire trace?

If barracuda are about, yes - they will bite through mono or fluorocarbon in one go. A short single-strand wire trace solves it. We stock it.

How do I look after it?

Rinse in fresh water and dry it after every trip, particularly the blade clevis - salt seizing the clevis is what stops a spinner spinning. A drop of light oil on the pivot keeps it turning freely.
