Product description

About this product

Every 4×4 in Tanzania carries a spare wheel, and the hollow in the middle of it travels empty. Front Runner’s braai grate uses that space: the disassembled grate slides into the centre of the spare, and when you stop, it comes out and hooks over the same wheel to become a cooking surface 600 mm across.

That is a proper grate. Six hundred millimetres of laser-cut steel takes a group’s worth of meat at once rather than cooking in rounds, and it sits 210 mm above the coals, which is the right height for charcoal – close enough to sear, far enough not to burn. The legs and spacers are die-cast aluminium, which matters over years: aluminium will not rust into the steel and seize the assembly the way plated parts do.

It fits tyres from 29 to 37 inches, roughly 740 to 890 mm. For the smaller end of that range, 740 to 840 mm, the spacers are not needed; larger tyres use them. The whole kit is three legs, three spacers, three grids, twelve M5 bolts and nuts and two spanners, and it takes about fifteen minutes to put together the first time.

One honest note: it is designed for cooking over coals rather than over high flames. Let a fire burn down before cooking, which is how a braai should be run anyway. At 4.5 kg it is substantial without being a burden, and it needs something to hold it in place on the wheel – a spare wheel step, a ratchet strap or a wheel cover, none of which are included.

Questions

Good to know

Will it fit my spare wheel?

It fits tyres from 29 to 37 inches, roughly 740 to 890 mm. Measure the overall diameter of your spare including the tyre. If you are between sizes, message us and we will check it against the grate in Dar es Salaam.

When do I need the spacers?

For tyres between 740 and 840 mm, 29 to 33 inches, the spacers are not required. Larger tyres use them to bring the grate out to the right diameter.

Does it hold itself on the wheel?

It hooks over the spare, but it needs something to secure it - a spare wheel step, a ratchet strap or a wheel cover. None of those come with it, so tell us what you have and we will suggest the simplest fix.

Can I cook over a wood fire?

Over the coals of a wood fire, yes. It is designed for coals rather than high flames - let the fire burn down before you cook, which is how a braai works anyway.

How long does assembly take?

About fifteen minutes the first time, using the two spanners supplied. You do not need any tools of your own.

How do I clean it?

Brush the steel grids while they are still warm. Let everything cool before dismantling, and store it dry inside the spare wheel.

Will the steel rust?

Steel over charcoal always develops a patina and some surface rust over time. Keep it dry and oil the grids lightly before storing if the vehicle lives near the coast.

How many people does it cook for?

The 600 mm grate handles a group comfortably - roughly eight to twelve people's worth of meat in a round, depending on the cuts.
