This is a block target: a slab of dense polyethylene foam that arrows drive into and stop. It is the standard practice target for anyone shooting at home.

The property that matters is the balance between stopping and releasing. Foam that is too soft lets arrows through. Foam that is too dense or too grippy stops them beautifully and then refuses to give them back – and pulling hard on an arrow at an angle is exactly how shafts get bent and points get left behind. A good block does both jobs: the arrow stops in the first few centimetres and comes out with one hand.

Foam blocks wear from the middle outwards because everyone aims at the middle. Two habits treble the life of one: pin a paper face slightly off-centre and move it around, and turn the block over and end for end regularly. A block worn through in the centre still has four good faces left on it.

Always shoot with a backstop behind the target – a wall, a bank, a hedge, or a hanging sheet of heavy cloth. Arrows miss, and an arrow that misses a target in an open garden travels a very long way. This is not a theoretical risk; it is the commonest accident in home archery.

Keep it out of the rain and out of long sun. Foam that has been soaked goes soft and stops holding arrows, and UV chalks the surface. Carrying it indoors after a session is the single thing that decides whether it lasts one season or five.

Good to know

Will it stop a compound bow arrow?

At normal practice weights, yes. Very high draw weights with light fast arrows will bury deeper and wear the block faster. If you shoot a heavy compound, expect to replace a block more often or step up to a larger, denser one.

Can I shoot broadheads into it?

No. Broadheads cut the foam apart and will destroy a block in a handful of shots, and they are extremely hard to pull back out. Practise with field points and use a dedicated broadhead target if you need to check broadhead flight.

How do I make it last?

Move the aiming point around instead of always shooting the centre, turn the block over and end for end regularly, and bring it indoors after every session. Those three habits easily treble its life.

Do I need a backstop behind it?

Yes, always. Arrows miss, and in an open garden a missed arrow carries a long way. A wall, a bank, a thick hedge or a hanging sheet of heavy cloth behind the target is the basic safety requirement for shooting at home.

Can I use it indoors?

Yes, in a room long enough to shoot safely with something solid behind the target. Shooting indoors is actually easier on the block - no rain, no sun, and a wall behind it.

My arrows are getting hard to pull out. What changed?

Usually the same spot has been shot repeatedly and the foam has compressed and closed around the shafts. Move the aiming point. If the whole block has gone hard or soggy, it has probably been rained on and is near the end of its life.
