Product description

About this product

Leverage is the point. Everything else is a bonus.

Most folding shovels are too short to dig properly, which is why they end up unused. This one extends to 37.4 inches, roughly the length of a garden spade, so you can dig standing up and put your weight behind it rather than crouching and scraping.

The head folds through to work as a pickaxe for hard ground, and the handle sections carry a saw and other tools. That combination — dig, break, cut — is what you actually need when a vehicle is bogged, a fire pit needs digging, or a track is blocked.

It folds down for a boot or a pack.

Questions

Good to know

Is a folding shovel strong enough for real digging?

For sand, soil and vehicle recovery, yes, provided you use it as a shovel. Where folding shovels break is prying: levering a rock or a root with the blade puts all the load on the folding joint. Dig with it, do not lever with it.

Will it get a vehicle out of sand?

It is one of the two things that will, the other being something to put under the tyres. Dig the sand away from in front of each wheel and down to a shallow ramp rather than trying to lift the vehicle. The long handle is what makes that possible without exhausting yourself.

How good is the saw?

Useful for branches up to wrist thickness and for clearing a track. It is not a replacement for a proper bow saw or an axe if you are cutting firewood regularly. Think of it as the tool that is with you rather than the best tool for the job.

Is it worth it over a plain spade?

If you drive off tarmac, yes, because a spade does not fit in a vehicle and this does. At home a spade is better and cheaper. The value here is that it is in the car on the day you need it.

How do I look after it?

Clean the soil off before folding, especially wet clay and salt sand, since grit in the folding joints is what seizes them. Dry it and put a little oil on the pivot and the blade. Check the locking collar is tight before each heavy use.
