This is the large, bath-sized towel in Naturehike-s quick-dry range: 70% polyamide and 30% polyester, with an antibacterial treatment and an anti-UV finish.

The blend is what makes it comfortable. Polyamide microfibre is the soft, absorbent kind – it feels like a towel rather than the slightly squeaky, plasticky feel of cheap all-polyester travel towels. It absorbs a great deal of water for its weight, and then wrings out to almost dry, which is the property that actually matters.

In this climate, drying speed is not about convenience. A damp cotton towel folded into a bag in Dar es Salaam humidity is sour by the next morning; give it two days and it has to be washed before it can be used. A quick-dry towel with an antibacterial finish hangs over a chair back and is dry within the hour, which is why it is standard kit for anyone travelling the coast, on a dive boat, or camping for several days.

The anti-UV property gives it a second job. Draped over the shoulders or the back of the neck on an open boat, it is the difference between an afternoon out on the water and a burnt neck for three days afterwards.

One rule: no fabric softener, ever. Softener coats microfibre and destroys its absorbency permanently – a softened microfibre towel pushes water around instead of picking it up, and nothing brings it back.

Why is a synthetic towel better for travel than cotton?

Because cotton holds several times its own weight in water and then stays damp for a day, which in this humidity means it starts to smell before it dries. A microfibre towel absorbs well, wrings out almost dry, and is dry again within the hour.

What does the antibacterial finish do?

It slows the growth of the bacteria that make a damp towel smell. In this humidity that is the practical difference between a towel you can use for a week of travel and one you have to wash after two days. It is not a substitute for washing it.

Is it as soft as a cotton towel?

Not quite - nothing is. But the polyamide-heavy blend is the soft kind of microfibre, not the squeaky sort. Most people find it entirely comfortable, and it is a fair trade for a towel that packs to a third of the size.

What is the anti-UV property for?

It means the towel can be used as sun cover - over the shoulders on a boat, over the back of the neck on a beach, or as shade for a child. That second use is worth more than it sounds on an open boat here.

How do I wash it?

Cool machine wash, no fabric softener, and line dry. Softener is the one thing that ruins a microfibre towel - it coats the fibres and destroys the absorbency that makes the towel work. Never tumble dry on high heat either; synthetic fibres melt and mat.

Can I use it after diving or swimming in the sea?

Yes, and rinse it in fresh water afterwards along with everything else. Salt left in any towel makes it feel permanently damp, because salt draws moisture out of the air.

How long will it last?

Years, if you keep fabric softener away from it and do not tumble dry it hot. The two things that kill microfibre towels are softener, which coats the fibres, and high heat, which melts and mats them.
