The F179 is Junxing-s short takedown hunting recurve: a 17-inch cast aluminium riser with a camouflage water-transfer finish, carrying laminated limbs of fibreglass over a maple core, for a 56-inch bow overall.

That 56-inch figure is the manufacturer-s own, and it is worth understanding because it does not follow Western convention. A 17-inch riser on an ILF target bow usually gives 60 to 64 inches overall; Junxing pair this riser with short hunting limbs instead. The result is a genuinely compact bow with a relatively high brace height – designed to be carried and shot in cover, not to hold a tight group off a target line at 70 metres.

Short bows demand more of the archer. The string angle at full draw is steep, so it pinches the fingers more and is more sensitive to where it sits against your face; small errors in release show up larger on the target. Anyone starting archery from nothing will learn faster on a long bow. Someone who already shoots, and who wants a bow they can carry through thick bush, is exactly who this is for.

Good to know

Is this a good first bow?

Not really. A short recurve is less forgiving than a long one - the string angle pinches the fingers and small release errors are magnified. If you are starting from nothing, the 66 in F155 will teach you far faster. Come to this one when you can already shoot.

Why is a 56 in bow paired with a 17 in riser?

Junxing pair this riser with short hunting limbs rather than the longer limbs a target bow would use, and they do not measure to the AMO standard. The 56 in figure is their own published specification. The result is a deliberately compact hunting bow.

What draw weight should I choose?

Whatever you can draw and hold steady for twenty shots. A recurve has no let-off, so at 50 lb you hold 50 lb the whole time you aim. Most people who shoot a recurve well are shooting less weight than they imagined they would.

Can I change the limbs later?

Yes, the limbs bolt off. You can move up or down in draw weight without replacing the riser, and the bow packs flat into a case for travel.

What does the camouflage finish do?

It is a water-transfer pattern over the cast riser - cosmetic and practical for hunting, and it also protects the aluminium. Patterns vary by batch; tell us what you want and we will say what is in stock.

What else do I need?

Arrows spined for your draw weight and length, an arm guard, a finger tab or glove, and a target. At hunting weights an arm guard is not optional - a 45 lb string on a bare forearm is genuinely painful.

Can I hunt with a bow in Tanzania?

Bowhunting is legal in Tanzania but it is licensed separately and more strictly than rifle hunting - licence and area fees are charged at double the rifle rate, and dangerous game may not be taken with a bow. Arrange the licence through a registered outfitter before you plan a hunt. Target shooting and practice need no licence.
