What makes a beginner enjoy a kayak is not speed, it is not feeling like they are about to fall in. Beam does that, and this boat is 91 cm wide – broad for a single. It is 290 cm long with an open cockpit, which is the other thing a beginner wants: easy to climb into from a beach, easy to get back into if you do end up in the water, and easy to rinse out afterwards.

The cockpit has an adjustable inflatable seat that moves fore and aft, so you can trim the boat to your weight and to whatever you are carrying. Two removable fins clip on underneath. They matter: an inflatable without fins wanders with every stroke and every puff of wind, and with them it holds a line.

The hull is Bestway’s Inflata-Shield fabric over three separate air chambers, with an inflatable floor that stiffens under pressure. Maximum load is 120 kg, which is one adult plus a dry bag, water and a rod.

It suits Msasani Bay, the Mbezi creek, the lagoons at Kigamboni and Bagamoyo, Zanzibar and Mafia, and the sheltered edges of the lakes. It comes out of a bag, inflates in under ten minutes, and goes back in the boot afterwards – which for most people in Dar es Salaam is the whole reason an inflatable makes sense.

Good to know

Is this a good first kayak?

It is one of the better ones, because of the width. At 91 cm across it is broad for a single and it does not feel tippy, which is what puts beginners off. The open cockpit also makes getting in and out easy.

What is the difference between the open and closed cockpit models?

An open cockpit is easier to enter, exit and rinse out, and better in warm water. A closed cockpit keeps more spray out in chop. For Tanzanian conditions most people prefer the open one.

How long does it take to inflate?

Five to ten minutes with the supplied hand pump. Inflate it firm rather than rock hard, and let air out if it will stand in full sun.

What load will it carry?

120 kg, which is one adult with a dry bag, water and a rod. Keep the weight low and centred rather than at one end.

Do I need the fins?

On open water yes - without them the boat wanders with every stroke. Take them off in very shallow water or over coral where they would catch.

Is it safe on the sea here?

In sheltered bays and lagoons in calm conditions, with buoyancy aids. These are recreational boats, not sea kayaks. Stay inside the reef, avoid surf, and treat offshore wind as the main hazard - it pushes a light inflatable out faster than you can paddle back.

How do I look after it in salt water?

Rinse the whole boat with fresh water after every sea trip, including the valves and the underside, and let it dry completely before rolling it up. Salt left to dry in the seams is what ages an inflatable fastest on this coast.

Can I leave it inflated in the sun?

Not for long. Equatorial sun both degrades the material over time and raises the internal pressure, which stresses the seams. Let some air out if it is sitting in full sun, and store it deflated, dry and out of direct light.
