Product description

About this product

Two problems, one tool.

Pegs go in badly when you drive them with a rock, and they come out worse when you pull them by the guy line. This solves both: a proper hammer face for driving, and a hook on the butt for hooking under the peg head and levering it straight out.

Aluminium keeps it light enough that it actually goes in the bag, which is the difference between owning one and using one. The handle is shaped to reduce the jarring that a metal-on-metal hammer sends up your arm.

Questions

Good to know

Why not just use a rock?

Because a rock hits the peg off-centre, bends it, and mushrooms the head so it will not come out cleanly. Bent pegs then fail in wind. A flat face drives the peg straight in a few strokes, which is faster as well as better.

Does the hook really matter?

More than the hammer, for most people. Pulling a peg by its guy line strains the line, the peg point and often the tent eyelet, and in hard ground it simply does not work. Hooking the head and levering takes a second and saves your gear.

Is aluminium heavy enough to drive pegs?

For normal pegs in normal ground, yes. In very hard or stony ground a heavier steel mallet drives faster. The trade is that a steel one is heavy enough that people leave it at home, and the best mallet is the one in the bag.

Will it work on the long pegs for a gazebo?

Yes, and that is where it earns its money, because a gazebo has many pegs and they all come out again at the end of the day.

How do I look after it?

Rinse sand and salt off, particularly around the hook. Check the head is tight on the handle occasionally. Aluminium will mark from use, which is cosmetic.

What is the hook for?

Pulling tent pegs, mostly. Driving a peg in is easy; getting one out of hard ground with your fingers is not, and the hook is what turns that from a struggle into a moment. It also works for dragging a hot grill grate or hooking a line.
