About this product
Assist hooks live or die on two dimensions: the gape, and the wire. Gape matters because the hook has to find a mouth that already has a large metal jig in it – a narrow-gaped hook simply cannot reach past the jig to the jaw. Wire matters because jigging drag settings are high and a fish that turns hard puts everything through the hook at once.
These are forged from high carbon steel with a deliberately wide gape, in a bright tin finish – a proper saltwater plating rather than a paint, chosen for corrosion resistance. They are tied as a twin assist, giving two chances at a hook-up on a fish that hits the head of the jig, which is where jigging fish hit.
The cord is Japanese PE with an inner nylon core. That construction matters more than it sounds: pure braid is limp and tangles round the jig on the drop, while the nylon core gives the cord enough body to stand away from the jig and stay where it should be.
Around Dar es Salaam they belong on jigs fished over the offshore reef edges, drop-offs and pinnacles for grouper, snapper, jobfish, amberjack, kingfish and dogtooth tuna.
