Highlights

Sinks, so you choose the depth

A sinking minnow lets you count it down before you start winding - which means one lure covers the surface, mid-water and the top of the reef.

110 mm, 36 g, sinking

Heavy for its length, so it casts a long way into wind.

Works 0.2 to 3 m

Count it down and vary the retrieve to pick your depth in that band.

VMC hooks

A named hook brand rather than an anonymous treble (supplier figure).

3D eyes on ABS

Moulded ABS body with high-simulation eyes and internal detailing.

Product description

About this product

A sinking minnow is more versatile than a floating one, because the depth is up to you. Cast it, count it down, and start winding – a two-second count keeps it near the surface, a ten-second count puts it down on the reef. One lure covers the whole band from 0.2 m to about 3 m.

At 110 mm and 36 g the NBL9448 is dense for its length, which is what gives it casting distance, particularly into the afternoon sea breeze. The body is ABS with 3D eyes and internal detailing, and it is fitted with VMC trebles – a named Japanese-French hook brand rather than an anonymous treble, which is unusual at this price.

Off Dar es Salaam it suits casting over reef, working a channel mouth on a moving tide, and fishing from the rocks at Msasani or Kigamboni. Kingfish, queenfish, barracuda, trevally and small tuna all take it. A variant, the 9448E, exists at the same 110 mm and 36 g.

Questions

Good to know

How do I fish a sinking minnow?

Cast it, then count before you start winding - one second per foot of depth is a rough starting point. A short count keeps it shallow, a long count puts it down near the reef. Vary the count until you find the fish.

What will take it around Dar es Salaam?

Kingfish, queenfish, barracuda, trevally and small tuna, cast over reef, into a channel mouth on a moving tide, or off the rocks at Msasani and Kigamboni.

Are VMC hooks good?

Yes - VMC is a long-established hook maker and a real step above unbranded trebles. That said, on a lure that may meet a big kingfish, upgrading the split rings is still worth doing.

What knot should I use?

A loop knot, or a snap to the split ring, so the lure can swing freely. A tight knot snugged onto the tow eye kills the action.

What is the difference between this and the 9448E?

Noeby list both at 110 mm and 36 g. The E is a variant of the same lure; they do not publish what distinguishes them. Ask us which we have in stock.

Does colour matter?

Less than depth and retrieve speed. Natural silver and blue in clear water and sun; brighter or darker patterns in murky water and low light.

Should I upgrade the hooks and split rings?

On a lure that will meet a serious fish, yes - it is cheap insurance. Straightened hooks and opened split rings are the commonest way a good fish is lost. Ask us what size suits.

How do I look after it?

Rinse in fresh water after every trip and dry the lure, hooks especially, before it goes back in the box. Salt left on trebles rusts them within days here, and a blunt or rusty point does not set.
