About this product
Javelin Frog Topwater Lure – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.
Fishing a frog is the most visual thing you can do with a lure. You cast it into the worst cover you can find – weed mats, lily pads, floating rubbish – and twitch it across the top, and somewhere under there a fish explodes through the surface to take it. Nothing else in fishing looks quite like it.
It works because of how the lure is built. The body is hollow soft plastic with a double hook laid along the back, points tucked against the body so nothing catches on the weed. When a fish clamps down, the body collapses, the points come clear, and the hook sets. A hard-bodied lure with trebles would be snagged before it travelled a metre.
At 90 mm and 14 g it casts a long way for its size and sits high enough to walk from side to side with rhythmic twitches of the rod tip. Noeby aim it at snakehead and bass; in Tanzania the equivalent targets are bass, tigerfish and Nile perch in the weedy margins of the lakes, dams and rivers.
The technique that matters most is the pause after the strike. A fish that takes a frog usually has to be given a second before you set – striking at the splash pulls the lure straight out of its mouth. Wait until you feel weight, then sweep the rod hard.
