Highlights

Thin, so it does not wedge

A round weight jams between rocks. A pencil sinker slides out of the gap it fell into - which is why drop-shotting over structure is possible at all.

Slim pencil profile

Slides out of gaps in rock and weed instead of wedging, so you lose far fewer rigs.

Good bottom contact

The narrow shape sits down on the bottom and transmits what it is sitting on.

Natural presentation

Low water resistance, so the bait above it moves freely.

Drop shot specific

Shaped for the one rig that fishes a bait above a weight on the bottom.

Product description

About this product

Drop Shot Pencil Sinker – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

Drop-shotting works by putting a weight on the bottom and hanging the bait above it, so the bait stays in the strike zone while you barely move it. That only works if the weight stays on the bottom and can be recovered – which is where the shape comes in.

A round or teardrop weight falls into a gap between rocks and wedges there. A pencil sinker – long, thin and straight – falls into the same gap and slides back out of it, because there is no shoulder to catch. Over rock, coral and weed, that difference is the difference between fishing and re-rigging.

The slim profile also moves through water with very little resistance, so the bait above it can work naturally instead of being dragged.

Set it up with the main line through a swivel or tied to the hook with a long tag, the weight attached to the bottom of that tag, and the bait nose-hooked above it. Then let the weight sit on the bottom, keep slight tension, and shake the rod tip so the bait quivers in place.

Around Dar es Salaam it suits jetties, harbour walls and rocky margins for snapper, grunter and small queenfish; inland it is a tilapia, bass and perch technique for the lakes and dams.

Questions

Good to know

Why a pencil shape rather than a round one?

Because a round weight wedges between rocks and a pencil slides out. There is no shoulder to catch. Over rock, coral or weed that shape is the reason you can fish a drop shot there at all.

How do I set up a drop shot rig?

Tie the hook onto the main line with a long tag end left below it, attach the weight to the end of that tag, and nose-hook the bait so it hangs horizontally. The weight sits on the bottom, the bait hangs above it.

How far above the bottom should the bait be?

Usually 20 to 60 cm, set by the length of the tag. Shorter when fish are hard on the bottom, longer when they are cruising above it. It is the easiest thing to change on the rig, so experiment.

How do I fish it?

Almost in place. Let the weight settle, keep light tension, and shake the rod tip so the bait quivers without moving the weight. Occasional small lifts and long pauses. It is a technique for tempting rather than provoking.

What weight do I need?

Enough to hold bottom and no more. Drop-shotting depends on feeling the weight down there, and an over-heavy sinker deadens everything. Depth and current decide it.

What will it catch around Dar es Salaam?

Snapper, grunter and small queenfish off jetties, harbour walls and rocky margins. Inland it is an effective tilapia, bass and perch technique on the lakes and dams.

What line should I use?

Braid with a fluorocarbon leader. Drop-shot bites are subtle and braid is what lets you feel them; the leader gives you abrasion resistance against the structure you are fishing.

What weights do you stock?

Our supplier does not publish the range for this listing. Tell us the depth and current you fish and we will tell you what is on the shelf.
