Highlights

Length for the beach

Nine and a half feet is a shore-casting length. It keeps line above the wash, clears the rocks in front of you, and adds real distance over a boat rod.

9 ft 6 in (2.90 m), 2-piece

A dedicated shore length - distance off the sand and line control over rocks.

Medium power

Enough for metal and mid-size lures without the stiffness that kills casting feel.

Fuji guides and reel seat

The Weapons IV series is built with Fuji O-ring guides and a Fuji reel seat.

Toray high-modulus carbon

Wrapped construction with fast action running the full length of the blank.

Product description

About this product

Weapons is CRONY’s saltwater all-rounder series, and the long models in it are shore rods. At 9 ft 6 in, the WAS4-962M does the two things a beach and rock rod has to do: it puts the cast out past the first gutter, and it holds the line high enough to keep it off the wash and off the rocks in front of you. Both matter more than most people expect, and neither is possible with a 7 ft boat rod.

The series build is well documented even where individual model figures are not: Toray high-modulus carbon in a wrapped construction, fast action running the length of the blank rather than just the tip, Fuji O-ring guides, a Fuji reel seat and high-density EVA grips under a high-gloss lacquer. Fuji O-rings are the sensible middle of Fuji’s range – hard-wearing, fine with braid, and considerably cheaper to replace than SiC if one gets chipped on a rock.

Medium power at this length gives a rod that casts metal slices and mid-size lures a long way and still has enough through-blank action to absorb a hard run from a kingfish in the shore break.

One thing to raise before you order: this exact code, WAS4-962M, does not appear in the documented Weapons IV line-up we could find, which lists 8 ft, 10 ft and 11 ft models but no 9 ft 6 in. It may be a regional SKU. We have asked CRONY to confirm, and we would rather flag it than pretend otherwise – contact us and we will confirm exactly what is in stock before you commit.

Questions

Good to know

What does the model number mean?

WAS = Weapons Spinning, 4 = fourth generation, 96 = 9 ft 6 in, 2 = two pieces, M = medium. The same system reads every CRONY rod once you know it.

Why do you say the model code needs confirming?

Because the published Weapons IV range we could find lists 8 ft, 10 ft and 11 ft models and no 9 ft 6 in. That may simply mean this is a regional SKU not shown on the sites we can reach. We have asked CRONY. Ask us before ordering and we will confirm exactly what is in the shop.

What reel size should I use?

A 5000 to 6000 size saltwater spinning reel balances a 9 ft 6 in rod, with 20-40 lb braid and a shock leader if you are casting heavy metal off the rocks.

What can I catch from shore around Dar es Salaam?

Kingfish, queenfish, barracuda, trevally and snapper off the rocks at Msasani and Kigamboni, and along the beaches north towards Kunduchi at dawn and dusk. A long rod earns its keep where you need to clear rock or reach past a shallow gutter.

Is CRONY a Japanese brand?

No - CRONY is Weihai CRONY Fishing Tackle Co., Ltd, based in Shandong, China. The Japanese part is the componentry: Toray carbon blanks and, across much of the range, Fuji guides and reel seats. We would rather be accurate than repeat a marketing line.

Is Fuji O-ring good enough, or should I want SiC?

O-ring is Fuji's hard-wearing mid-range insert and it is entirely adequate with braid. SiC is harder and slicker but costs more and chips just as readily on a rock. On a shore rod that gets knocked about, O-ring is arguably the more sensible choice.

How should I look after it on this coast?

Rinse the blank, guides and reel seat with fresh water after every session and dry it before it goes into a bag or tube. Salt left in a reel-seat thread is what seizes it. Check guide inserts for chips - a chipped ring cuts braid under load.

Do you deliver outside Dar es Salaam?

Yes, nationwide. A 9 ft 6 in two-piece rod ships in a tube - tell us your destination and we will quote transport.
