Highlights

Short rod, heavy lifting

Jigging rods are short for a reason: every inch of extra length is leverage the fish gets to use against you. Five foot six is what you want at 100 metres with an amberjack on.

5 ft 6 in, one piece

No ferrule to work loose under load - a one-piece blank is the standard for serious jigging.

80-200 g jig rating

Covers the knife jigs and speed jigs used on the drop-offs and pinnacles off this coast.

Casting (overhead) configuration

Built for a conventional/overhead reel, which is the stronger setup for lifting big fish.

Built for the fight

The Amazing series is CRONY's dedicated offshore jigging family, Fuji-equipped across the range.

Product description

About this product

Vertical jigging is a physical way to fish and it breaks rods that were not built for it. The load is not a cast – it is a repeated, hard, upward pull with a heavy metal jig on the end, and then a fish that pulls the other way for twenty minutes. That is why jigging rods look the way they do: short, one piece, with a long butt section to brace against your body and a blank that bends into the middle rather than at the tip.

The AHJC561 is 5 ft 6 in and rated 80-200 g of jig. That covers most of the knife jigs and speed jigs people fish on the drop-offs and pinnacles off Dar es Salaam and around Mafia – typically 100 to 180 g depending on depth and current. It is the casting version, which means it is built for an overhead or conventional reel with the guides on top. For jigging that is the stronger arrangement: the load pushes the line into the blank rather than trying to pull the guides off it.

CRONY’s Amazing series is their dedicated jigging family, split into Heavy Jigging, Slow Jigging, Light Jig and Brisk Jigging. All are one-piece, and CRONY markets the range with Fuji guides and Fuji reel seats.

One thing to check before ordering: CRONY builds the AHJC561 code in more than one jig rating – an 80-200 g and a 150-300 g version. The rod on this page is the 80-200 g. If you want the heavier one, tell us and we will confirm availability.

Questions

Good to know

What reel goes with this rod?

An overhead/conventional jigging reel in the 15-30 lb class - a lever-drag or a star-drag jigging reel with a fast retrieve. Load it with 40-65 lb braid and a fluorocarbon leader. The rod is built for guides-up overhead use, not for a spinning reel.

Where does jigging work around Dar es Salaam?

The drop-offs and pinnacles offshore of Dar, the channel between the mainland and Mafia, and the deeper reef edges north towards Bagamoyo and south towards Kilwa. Amberjack, dogtooth tuna, grouper, snapper, kingfish and rainbow runner all come to jigs here.

What jig weight should I fish?

Within the 80-200 g rating, choose by depth and current: enough weight that the jig gets to the bottom close to vertical. In 60-80 m with moderate current that is usually 120-150 g; in deeper water or a running tide, go heavier.

Why is it only 5 ft 6 in?

Leverage. A long rod gives the fish a longer lever to pull against you, and jigging is already hard work. A short blank puts the lifting power in your arms and back rather than in the rod tip.

Can I use it for bottom bait fishing too?

It will handle a heavy sinker and bait perfectly well, though it is stiffer than a dedicated bottom rod and you lose some bite detection. It is built to work a jig.

Some specifications are missing - why?

CRONY publishes its spec tables as images rather than text and does not break them out for this model. We have listed only figures we can source. Ask us and we will weigh and measure the rod in the shop before you buy.

How do I look after it?

Rinse the rod, guides and reel seat with fresh water after every trip and dry it before storage. Jigging puts salt water everywhere. Check the guide inserts for chips regularly - a chipped ring will cut braid under load.

Do you deliver outside Dar es Salaam?

Yes, nationwide. A one-piece 5 ft 6 in rod ships in a tube without difficulty - tell us your destination and we will quote.
