Product description

About this product

This is the plain butane canister used by simple portable stoves and burners. It is the cheapest way to cook away from mains gas, and it is the fuel type most single-burner camping stoves in this market are designed around.

Important: canister types are not interchangeable. Check whether your stove takes a pierceable canister, a screw-in threaded one, or a flat cassette, and match the fuel to the stove.

Key Features

  • Butane fuel for portable stoves and burners
  • Clean, even flame suited to cooking
  • Compact and inexpensive

Before You Buy

Bring your stove or a photograph of its gas fitting. Screw-in, pierceable and flat cassette canisters look similar to a newcomer and are not interchangeable. We would rather check than have you find out at a campsite.

Questions

Good to know

Which stoves does it fit?

Bring your stove or a photo of its gas connection and we will match it on the counter. Canister fittings are not standard across types, and a mismatch is a safety problem rather than an inconvenience.

How should I store gas canisters?

Upright, somewhere cool and ventilated, out of direct sun and never in a closed car in Dar heat. A canister in a hot boot is a genuine hazard, not a theoretical one.

Can I fly with them?

No. Gas canisters of any kind are forbidden in both cabin and checked baggage on every airline. Buy them at your destination.

How do I know when one is empty?

Weigh it, or shake it. The stated gas weight is the fuel only; the steel is extra, so an apparently heavy canister may be nearly empty.

Does cold affect performance?

Butane struggles below about 5 C, which almost never matters in Tanzania but does on Kilimanjaro and Meru. Above 3,000 m or in cold nights, an isobutane or propane mix performs far better.

How do I dispose of an empty one?

Empty it completely, puncture it only with a proper tool if you have one, and take it to a metal recycler. Never put a sealed canister in a fire or in general waste.

Can I connect any stove to any canister?

No, and this is where people get hurt. Screw-in (threaded) and puncture (pierceable) and flat cassette canisters are three different systems. Match the canister to the stove, or use the correct adapter.
