About this product

This is the straightforward version of the vehicle side awning – the same 200 x 250 cm of cover and the same 420D ripstop polyoxford fabric rated to 3,000 mm, supplied in a heavy-duty 600 g PVC travel cover rather than an aluminium hard case.

Five square metres is enough to change how a camp works. It puts the table, the chairs and the cooking area out of the sun through the middle of the day and out of the rain when a storm arrives, and because it is attached to the vehicle it goes up wherever you stop rather than needing a suitable pitch. On a beach at Kigamboni, at a camp in Mikumi or beside a roadside stall, it is the same two minutes of work.

The frame is aluminium with 22 mm and 25 mm telescopic poles adjusting from 160 to 200 cm. Setting the poles at different heights is worth learning: high on the vehicle side and lower on the outside sheds rain off the edge instead of pooling it, and lowering the windward pole cuts the draught coming underneath.

The PVC cover is waterproof and heavy enough for normal use. If the vehicle lives outdoors year-round or spends its time on narrow tracks with branches, the aluminium hard-case version protects the fabric better – but for most people this is the sensible choice, and it puts less weight on the roof.

Good to know

Will it fit my vehicle?

It mounts to roof rack crossbars or a rack tray rather than to the roof itself, so what matters is your rack and its load rating, not the badge on the car. Send us a photograph of your roof setup and we will tell you honestly whether it will work.

How does it compare with the hard-case version?

Same awning, same size, same fabric rating. This one comes in a heavy PVC cover, the other in an aluminium hard case. The hard case protects the fabric better on rough tracks and in permanent outdoor parking; this one is lighter on the roof and better value.

How long does it take to set up?

A few minutes - unzip the cover, pull the awning out, set the poles and peg the guy lines. One person manages it comfortably.

Will it hold in rain?

Yes, at a 3,000 mm rating. Set one side lower so water runs off. Pooling water in a flat panel is what damages awnings, not rain itself.

Will it hold in wind?

Pegged and guyed, in normal conditions. Always peg it - an awning is a sail, and rolling it away before a squall costs a minute where repairing it costs far more.

What height do I get underneath?

The poles adjust from 160 to 200 cm, so you can stand and cook under it, or set it lower to shed rain and block wind.

Can I add side walls?

Walls are available for awnings of this size generally. Tell us what you need and we will confirm what fits this model before you order.

How much weight does it add to the roof?

The supplier does not publish a weight. Ask us and we will weigh the unit in Dar es Salaam, since it counts against your rack's load rating.
