About this product

Carrying a second spare is standard practice for anyone driving serious distances in Tanzania. Getting it onto the roof is easy; getting it there without turning the vehicle into something that no longer fits under a garage door is the part people underestimate. This clamp is shaped around that problem – a low-profile design that keeps the loaded rack height to a minimum.

It is built from black powder-coated high-strength steel and weighs about 1.5 kg, mounting across two slats of a Front Runner roof rack or onto a Front Runner load bar set. It takes a wide range of tyre sizes and bolt patterns, and it copes with deep-offset rims by mounting them hollow side up. The clamp tightens against the rear face of the wheel rather than the face you can see, so the rim finish is not marked by the fitting.

There is a padlock-ready bracket built in. A spare wheel on a roof rack is one of the more tempting things on a parked vehicle, and a lock is the cheapest insurance available – the padlock is not included, so tell us and we will supply one with it.

It measures 263 x 55 x 242 mm and comes as a rack bracket, a clamp bracket and the mounting hardware. Check the bolts after the first long stretch of rough road, as with any rack fitting.

Will it fit my wheel?

It takes a wide range of tyre sizes and bolt patterns. Deep-offset rims mount hollow side up. Send us a photograph of your wheel and rack, or bring the wheel to the Dar es Salaam showroom, and we will confirm before you buy.

Why does low profile matter?

Because every centimetre of rack height is a centimetre you think about at a garage door, a car park barrier or a low branch. A wheel on the roof already adds height - this keeps the fitting itself out of the equation.

Which racks does it fit?

Front Runner roof racks, mounting across two slats, or a Front Runner load bar set. If you have a different rack, bring measurements to the showroom and we will tell you honestly whether it works.

Can I lock the wheel to the rack?

Yes, there is a padlock-ready bracket. The padlock is not included - tell us and we will supply one with it.

Will it mark my rim?

It tightens against the rear face of the wheel rather than the visible front face, specifically to avoid that.

How much weight does it hold?

Front Runner do not publish a load rating for this clamp. It is made to carry a spare wheel, which is what we would use it for and nothing heavier.

Does it need checking after rough roads?

Yes, like any rack fitting. Check the bolts after the first long stretch of corrugations and then periodically - it takes a minute and prevents the obvious problem.
