Product description

About this product

Portable Stainless Steel Folding – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

A fire off the ground, from a bag the size of a water bottle.

The mesh is the clever part: air reaches the fuel from underneath as well as the sides, so the fire lights easily and burns cleanly, and the ash falls through instead of smothering it. The cross-frame legs slot together without tools and hold the bowl steady.

Packed it is 10 x 10 x 25 cm, which fits inside a pack rather than dominating a boot. That is what separates it from a solid fire pit: this one you carry in, rather than drive to.

It takes wood or charcoal up to 5 kg, so it is a fire for warmth, company and cooking a meal, not a bonfire.

Key Features

  • Stainless steel mesh bowl, 0.96 mm
  • Folding cross-frame stand, tool-free
  • Assembled 41.4 x 41.4 x 34 cm
  • Packs to 10 x 10 x 25 cm
  • Takes up to 5 kg of wood or charcoal
  • Carry bag included

Who It Suits

  • Backpacking and hike-in camps
  • Beach fires where ground fires are not wanted
  • Sites that ban fires directly on the ground
  • Anyone wanting a fire without carrying 6 kg of steel

Safety: use it on bare ground, sand or gravel, never on grass or decking. The mesh glows and the ground below still gets hot. Keep it well clear of tents, and let it cool fully before packing.

Questions

Good to know

How does this compare to the Fire Pit Max?

Different tools. The Fire Pit Max is 6 kg of 430 stainless with secondary combustion, built to last years of hard use, and it goes in a vehicle. This is under a kilo of mesh and tube that goes in a pack. If you drive to camp and the fire is the evening, buy that one. If you walk in, buy this.

Will the mesh burn through?

Eventually, with heavy use. Mesh is a consumable in a way a solid steel pit is not, and that is the trade for the weight. Keeping to the 5 kg fuel load and not raking hard metal across it makes a real difference to how long it lasts.

Can I cook on it?

Over the coals, yes, with a grill grate placed across. The mesh itself is not a cooking surface. Let the flames burn down first.

Does the ground below still get hot?

Yes. Raising the fire reduces scorching but does not eliminate it, and on grass it will still kill the turf and can ignite dry material underneath. Bare ground, sand or gravel, or a fire mat.

How do I look after it?

Let it cool completely, tip the ash out and brush the mesh gently. Do not pack it damp with ash in, since wet ash attacks steel. Store the frame separately so the tubes do not press into the mesh.

Can I use it on a beach or in a campsite here?

Check before you light anything. Many beaches along the coast and most managed campsites and reserves restrict open fires, and some prohibit them outright in dry season. A raised fire pit protects the ground beneath it, which is often exactly what a site is trying to preserve - but permission comes first.
