About this product

A trolling rod is a completely different tool from a casting rod and it is worth being clear about why. It never casts. It sits in a holder with a lure 30 metres behind the boat, takes a strike that arrives at trolling speed, and then spends the next twenty minutes to two hours bent into a horseshoe against a gunwale, a chair or a harness. Everything about the design follows from that: short, so the fish has less leverage; thick-walled, so it survives sustained load; and built around a heavy reel seat and a gimbal butt rather than around a light tip.

The 30-50 lb class is the middle of the trolling range and the most useful single outfit on this coast. It covers sailfish, wahoo, yellowfin tuna to a good size, dorado, kingfish and most of what comes up behind a spread off Dar es Salaam. Lighter than that and a wahoo will spool you; heavier and you are carrying more rod than the fishing needs on an ordinary day.

CRONY’s Tuna Warrior series is organised by line class rather than lure weight, which is standard for trolling rods – the number that matters is what the drag can pull, not what the lure weighs. The code reads straightforwardly: PTWTR, then 56 for 5 ft 6 in, then 30 50 for the 30-50 lb class.

Good to know

What does the model code mean?

PTWTR is the Tuna Warrior trolling prefix, 56 is the length in feet and inches (5 ft 6 in), and 3050 is the line class in pounds (30-50 lb). CRONY's trolling codes use a different scheme from their casting and spinning rods.

What reel should go on it?

A conventional lever-drag trolling reel in the 30 or 50 class - the sizes are named after the line class for exactly this reason. Load it with 30-50 lb mono or an equivalent braid with a mono topshot.

Where do people troll around Dar es Salaam?

Offshore of Dar and Msasani, the channel between the mainland and Mafia, around Latham Island, and north towards Pemba. Sailfish, marlin, yellowfin, wahoo, dogtooth tuna and kingfish all come to trolled lures and baits here, with the best of the billfish running roughly August through March.

Is 30-50 lb enough for marlin?

For a smaller black or striped marlin on a good angler in a chair, it can be done. For blue marlin, or if you want the fish released quickly and healthy, step up to the 50-80 lb rod - we stock the Tuna Warrior in that class too.

Can I use it for bottom fishing or jigging?

It will survive it, but it is not built for it: a trolling blank is too stiff in the tip to detect a bite and too short to work a jig properly. Use a jigging or bottom rod for that - we stock both.

Why are so many specifications missing?

CRONY publishes its spec tables as images rather than text, and does not break out guide type, reel seat, blank material or rod weight at model level for the Warrior trolling rods. We have listed only what we can point to a source for. Ask us and we will photograph and measure the actual rod in the shop before you buy.

How do I look after it?

Fresh water over the whole rod after every trip, particularly the reel seat threads and the gimbal. Rinse under load-bearing components rather than just hosing the blank. Store it horizontally or butt-down, never leaning under tension against a wall.
