Highlights

Short, glass, and very hard to break

A full-glass blank bends much further than carbon before it fails. On a rod that lives bent double with 20 kg of drag on it, that is the property that matters.

1.68 m (5 ft 6 in), one piece

No ferrule to work loose under sustained load - the standard for serious boat rods.

Full glass construction

Tougher and far more forgiving of shock loading than carbon at this end of the market.

50-80 lb and 80-130 lb classes

Available in two line ratings, covering everything from big tuna to the heaviest bottom work.

3+1 heavy guides

A short guide train with a 7.0 mm top ring - built to pass a heavy leader and knot without hanging up.

Product description

About this product

Boat Fishing Rod – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

This is the blunt instrument of the boat rack, and it is meant to be. At 1.68 m and one piece, in full glass, the NMT602-4 is built for one job: to stay bent for a long time with a heavy drag setting on it, and not break.

Glass is an old material in an industry that has largely moved to carbon, and it survives at this end of the market for good reason. Carbon is lighter and transmits more feel, but it fails suddenly when it is over-stressed or nicked. Glass bends much further before it gives, and it absorbs the shock of a strike at trolling speed or a fish that turns hard under the boat. On a rod that is pulled on rather than cast with, that trade is the right way round.

The build follows: one piece so there is no ferrule to loosen, a short 3+1 guide train with a 7.0 mm top ring that will pass a heavy leader knot, and enough blank wall that the rod weighs 704 g. That weight is a feature here, not a flaw.

It is offered in two line classes, 50-80 lb and 80-130 lb. Off this coast the 50-80 covers yellowfin, wahoo, sailfish, big kingfish and heavy reef work; the 80-130 is for when you are specifically after something much larger, or fishing very heavy tackle over deep structure.

Buying a Boat Fishing Rod in Tanzania

361 Degrees Adventure keeps the boat fishing rod at our showroom in Upanga, Dar es Salaam, with delivery countrywide across Tanzania. Come and handle it before you buy, or order online and collect.

Every boat fishing rod is checked in store before it leaves us, and our staff use the same kit in the field, so you get an honest answer on fit and sizing rather than a sales pitch.

Not sure which boat fishing rod suits you? Call or message the showroom and we will talk you through the options that are actually in stock in Dar es Salaam.

Spare parts and replacements for the boat fishing rod are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Questions

Good to know

Why a glass blank rather than carbon?

Carbon is lighter and more sensitive; glass is tougher and bends further before it breaks. On a big-game boat rod that spends hours bent double with a heavy drag on, glass's ability to absorb shock without shattering is worth more than sensitivity. It is why the trolling and stand-up end of the market still uses it.

Which line class should I choose, 50-80 or 80-130?

For general offshore work here - yellowfin, wahoo, sailfish, kingfish, big reef fish - the 50-80 is the more useful rod and the more pleasant to fish. Take the 80-130 only if you are specifically targeting very large fish or fishing very heavy tackle over deep structure. Tell us which you want when you order.

What reel goes with it?

A conventional lever-drag reel matched to the line class - a 50 class for the 50-80 lb rod, an 80 class for the 80-130. The rod, reel and line class are all named after the same number for exactly this reason.

Where would I use this around Dar es Salaam?

Offshore of Dar and Msasani, the channel out to Mafia, around Latham Island and north towards Pemba. Yellowfin and dogtooth tuna, wahoo, sailfish, kingfish and big grouper are all within its class. It is a boat rod - not something to cast from a beach.

What is the difference between this and the 1.83 m version?

Length only, as far as the published specification goes: the 1.83 m rod is 15 cm longer and listed in the 50-80 lb class alone. A shorter rod gives the fish less leverage and is easier to work in a crowded cockpit; a longer one gives you a little more reach around the boat.

Can I cast with it?

No - and it is not built to. This is a rod for trolling, drifting and bottom fishing from a boat. For casting you want a popping or shore rod.

Some of these figures are marked as supplier figures - why?

Noeby publishes the Leisure Big Game range only on a site we cannot currently reach, so these numbers come from our supplier rather than from a Noeby specification we can point you at. We have published them as given and marked them, rather than dropping them or dressing them up. If a particular figure matters to your purchase, ask us and we will measure the rod in the shop.

How do I look after it?

Rinse the whole rod with fresh water after every trip, getting water under the reel seat and into the gimbal rather than just over the blank. Dry it before storage, and store it flat or butt-down rather than leaning under its own tension.
