Product description

About this product

Crony Warrior Trolling Rod – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

The 50-80 lb class is the heavy end of a normal charter spread, and off this coast it earns its place. Blue and black marlin, big yellowfin, and the dogtooth tuna that live around the pinnacles all hit at speed and all pull hard enough that a 30-50 lb outfit becomes a long, unfair fight. Stepping up to 50-80 shortens the battle, which is better for the angler and much better for the fish if you intend to release it.

The rod itself is built to the same brief as the rest of the Tuna Warrior range: 5 ft 6 in, short and thick-walled, designed to be loaded continuously against a gunwale, a fighting chair or a stand-up harness rather than to cast. Everything is scaled up from the lighter class – the blank wall, the reel seat, the gimbal – because the drag settings it will see are roughly double.

The ST suffix is the one part of the code CRONY does not document. In the trade it is usually taken to mean a straight butt (as opposed to a bent butt), which is the configuration used for stand-up fighting rather than from a chair. We have not been able to confirm that with CRONY and we would rather tell you than assert it – if the butt configuration matters to you, ask us and we will photograph the actual rod before you order.

The rest of the code reads plainly: PTWTR for the Tuna Warrior trolling family, 56 for 5 ft 6 in, and 5080 for the 50-80 lb line class.

Questions

Good to know

What does the model code mean?

PTWTR is the Tuna Warrior trolling prefix, 56 is 5 ft 6 in, and 5080 is the 50-80 lb line class. The ST suffix is not documented by CRONY - see the note in the specifications.

Should I buy this or the 30-50 lb version?

If most of your fishing is sailfish, wahoo, dorado and mid-size tuna, the 30-50 is the better everyday rod. If you are targeting marlin or big dogtooth, or you want one outfit that will never be the weak link, take the 50-80. Many boats carry both.

What reel does it take?

A 50 or 80 class conventional lever-drag reel, loaded to match. The rod, reel and line class should all be the same number - that is the whole point of the class system.

Where do people troll around Dar es Salaam?

Offshore of Dar and Msasani, the channel between the mainland and Mafia, around Latham Island, and north towards Pemba. Sailfish, marlin, yellowfin, wahoo, dogtooth tuna and kingfish all come to trolled lures and baits here, with the best of the billfish running roughly August through March.

Is it a stand-up rod or a chair rod?

That is exactly what the ST suffix is likely to settle, and CRONY does not document it. A straight butt is fished stand-up with a harness; a bent butt is fished from a chair. Ask us and we will look at the rod in the shop and tell you which you are getting.

Why are so many specifications missing?

CRONY publishes its spec tables as images rather than text, and does not break out guide type, reel seat, blank material or rod weight at model level for the Warrior trolling rods. We have listed only what we can point to a source for. Ask us and we will photograph and measure the actual rod in the shop before you buy.

How do I look after it?

Rinse everything with fresh water after every trip, especially the reel seat threads and the gimbal, and get water under the fittings rather than just over the blank. Store it flat or butt-down, never leaning under tension.

Do you deliver outside Dar es Salaam?

Yes, nationwide. Tell us your destination and we will quote transport.
