Every boat needs a rod like this one. Not the specialist jigging blank or the popping rod, but the one that lives in the rack and gets used for everything – a bait down the tide over reef, a soft plastic worked on the drift, a paternoster over a wreck, and whoever came along for the day.

Noeby build the Leisure X5 to that brief. The blank uses their TORSEN graphite cloth at 45 degrees with an X-wrap outer layer, which is about resisting torsion rather than chasing lightness – a boat rod spends its life with the load coming from the side, along the hull, rather than straight up the blank. The guides are heavy-duty stainless frames with aluminium-oxide inserts, which is the sensible specification here: they take knocks against a gunwale without bending, and replacing one costs very little. The reel seat is heavy-duty graphite and the grips are EVA.

The 8 ft model is the largest in the range and the most useful all-rounder. Regular action, two sections breaking to 125.5 cm, 8+1 guides, rated PE 4-8 with sinkers from 80 to 300 g, and 19 kg of drag measured at 45 degrees. That is a genuinely strong rating for a rod of this type, and it is what lets you stop a grouper before it reaches its hole. Around Dar es Salaam that covers snapper, grouper, emperor, jobfish and kingfish over the reef and wrecks, and it doubles as a light trolling rod on a slow day.

One thing to settle before you order. Noeby’s own specification table for the X5 lists the 8 ft rod as two separate models – BBS802M for a spinning reel (288 g) and BBC802M for a casting reel (271 g). The code we were supplied, BB802M, does not distinguish between them. Tell us which reel you intend to use and we will confirm which of the two is in stock before you commit.

Good to know

Is the model code BB802M correct?

Noeby's own table lists the 8 ft X5 as two models: BBS802M for spinning and BBC802M for casting. The BB802M code we were supplied does not say which. Tell us which reel type you want and we will confirm what is physically in stock before you order.

What is the difference between the spinning and casting versions?

Very little beyond the reel they take. The spinning model weighs 288 g with a 2.55 mm tip; the casting model weighs 271 g with a 2.50 mm tip. Both are 8 ft, two-piece, 8+1 guides, PE 4-8 and 19 kg of drag.

What is this rod best at?

Downtide bottom fishing over reef and wreck, and working lures on the drift. Snapper, grouper, emperor, jobfish and kingfish are all within its range around Dar es Salaam.

What reel should I use?

For the spinning model, a 6000-8000 size reel with a strong drag; for the casting model, a conventional overhead. Load PE 4-6 braid to match the rating. The rod will take 19 kg of drag, so the reel should be able to deliver it.

What does drag at 45 degrees mean?

It is the maximum drag pressure the blank is rated to carry when held at 45 degrees to the line - the normal fighting angle. It is a more honest number than a bare lure rating because it tells you what the rod can actually pull.

Are aluminium-oxide guides a downgrade from Fuji?

They are a step below Fuji SiC or Alconite in hardness, and a sensible choice on a working boat rod. Guides on a boat get knocked against gunwales and rod racks; heavy stainless frames with a hard-wearing insert are cheap to replace and hard to damage.

Can I use it for light trolling?

Yes, for slow-trolled lures and live baits it works well. For proper big-game trolling you want a dedicated short trolling rod with a gimbal - we stock those.

How do I look after it here?

Rinse the blank, guides, ferrule and reel seat in fresh water after every session and dry before storage. Salt in a ferrule is what makes a two-piece rod stick; salt in a reel-seat thread is what seizes it.
