The X-3 Dirty Chain Machine is the tool that turns chain cleaning from a twenty-minute job into a two-minute one, and does it without spreading degreaser across the floor.

The chain runs through a sealed housing containing abrasive cleaning teeth and rotating brush wheels – Muc-Off count a hundred and twenty contact points – so every face of every link gets worked as you back-pedal. Cleaner sits in a top reservoir and is released by a control button, and the dirty fluid drains into a second lower reservoir where it stays away from the chain you have just cleaned.

The kit includes a 75 ml measure of Muc-Off Drivetrain Cleaner to get started, which can either be poured into the reservoir or sprayed over the drivetrain first.

One compatibility point to know before buying: Muc-Off state the X-3 is not compatible with BMX or track chains. Those single-speed chains are wider than a derailleur chain and will not run through the housing correctly.

The Drivetrain Cleaner is fully biodegradable, and Muc-Off note it is safe to dispose of down the drain if the chain was previously running one of their bio lubes – though letting solids settle out first is still the better habit.

Will it fit my chain?

It suits derailleur chains from 8 to 12 speed. Muc-Off state it is NOT compatible with BMX or track chains - those single-speed chains are wider and will not run through the housing correctly.

How do I use it?

Clip it onto the lower run of the chain, fill the top reservoir, hold the handle and back-pedal the cranks about twenty to thirty turns. Rinse the chain with water, dry it thoroughly, then lubricate.

Is cleaner included?

Yes, a 75 ml measure of Muc-Off Drivetrain Cleaner comes with the kit. You can also spray that over the rest of the drivetrain rather than pouring it all in.

Why is it better than a brush?

A hundred and twenty contact points working every face of the link at once, in a sealed housing. A brush cleans what it can reach and puts the dirty fluid on the floor.

Why does drying the bike matter so much here?

Because of the salt and the humidity. Water left standing in bolt heads, on the chain and around the cassette starts corrosion quickly on the coast. Dry the bike, then lubricate - ten minutes that adds years to a drivetrain.

What do I do with the dirty water?

Do not pour drivetrain runoff into a storm drain. Degreaser and old chain lube carry heavy metal particles from the chain. Let the solids settle in a bucket, dispose of the residue with solid waste, and pour the rest onto ground rather than into a drain.

Is this the right choice for Tanzanian conditions?

For most of the year around Dar es Salaam you are riding in heat and fine dust, which is dry-lube territory - a dry or wax lube leaves a drier film that dust does not stick to. Switch to a wet lube through the long rains in March to May and the short rains in November and December, when washing off matters more than staying clean.
