A microcell sponge, vacuum-packed flat and contoured to an ergonomic shape. Open the pack and it expands to a size that suits a bike frame and a wheel – which is the point of the packaging, not a gimmick: it ships and stores in a fraction of the space and uses less material doing it.
Microcell matters for a bike. The fine, closed cell structure holds a lot of soapy water and, more importantly, traps grit within the sponge rather than dragging it across your paint. A coarse household sponge does the opposite – it picks up a piece of road grit and carries it over the top tube like sandpaper.
On dusty roads here that difference is visible within a season. Frames that get washed with the wrong sponge develop a haze of fine swirl marks, and there is no undoing it short of a polish.
Rinse it out thoroughly between passes so the grit it has collected goes down the drain rather than back onto the bike, and keep it away from the drivetrain entirely.
