Highlights

For when a light peg is not the answer

25 cm of galvanised iron, sold in pairs for the corners that matter.

25 cm of galvanised iron

Long, heavy and blunt-tapered, so it drives through sand and soft soil and stays there.

Broad head

The 6.5 cm head takes a mallet squarely and gives the rope something to sit under.

Rope hole and neck

Thread the guy line through the hole or wrap it around the neck, both hold.

Luminous option

A glow-in-the-dark finish is made for this peg, so nobody trips over a guy line at night.

Product description

About this product

Aluminium pegs are for weight-conscious camping. This is the other kind. Each nail is 25 cm of galvanised iron weighing 223 g, with a broad head you can hit squarely and a tapered point that drives through sand, loose soil and the soft ground under grass.

The head carries a hole for a guy line and a narrowed neck to wrap a rope around, so it works as a tent anchor, a canopy anchor or a tie-down for anything else on the pitch. The galvanising is what keeps it usable on the coast.

Key Features

  • Galvanised iron, 25 x 6.5 cm
  • 223 g per nail, for real holding weight
  • Tapered point that drives easily
  • Rope hole in the head and a wrap neck below it
  • Sold in pairs, in black, orange or luminous

Who It Suits

Beach pitches, big family tents, canopies and gazebos, and anyone who has spent a night re-pegging a corner. Two nails on the windward corners will often settle a tent that keeps working loose on lighter pegs.

What Is Included

Questions

Good to know

Why only two in a pack?

Because most people do not want eight of these. The usual pattern is a pair of iron nails on the two windward corners and lighter aluminium pegs everywhere else. Buy two packs if you want all four corners anchored.

Will they hold on a beach?

Better than anything else this size. Twenty-five centimetres of tapered iron reaches down to the damp, firmer sand under the dry surface layer. In very loose sand, still angle them back away from the tent at about forty-five degrees.

What does the luminous version do?

The finish holds a glow after dark, so the peg and the guy line attached to it are visible when someone walks past the tent at night. Guy lines at ankle height are the commonest way people fall over at a campsite.

Do they rust?

The galvanising resists it, but these are iron. On the coast, rinse them in fresh water, dry them, and do not store them damp in a closed bag. A light wipe of oil before a long storage does no harm.

How do I get them out of packed ground?

Thread a cord or a tent peg through the head hole and lever against a flat stone, or tap the head sideways first to break the grip. Do not pull on the tent guy line.

Can I use them for anything besides a tent?

Yes. They anchor canopy legs, shade sails, dog runs and cargo tie-downs, and they are useful for pinning down a tarpaulin over equipment.

Are they too heavy to backpack with?

For a walking trip, yes, at 223 g each. These are for vehicle camping, beach days and anything you drive to.

Will a hammer damage the head?

A normal camping mallet is fine. A steel claw hammer will chip the galvanising off the head over time, which is where rust starts.
