Highlights

A spare frame pole, before you need one

Sectioned, so a 3.5 m pole travels as a short bundle.

8.5 mm aluminium

The standard section for the frame poles of larger dome and tunnel tents.

Elastic-corded sections

Shock cord runs through the pole, so the sections find each other and nothing gets lost.

7001 alloy, anodised

Aviation-grade alloy with an anodised surface that resists rust and scuffing.

Pair, with a sleeve

Two poles and a carry bag, because a tent frame needs matching pairs.

Product description

About this product

This is a frame pole set, not a telescopic upright. Short sections threaded on an internal elastic cord spring together into a long, flexible pole of roughly three and a half metres, which is the sort of length a five to eight person dome or tunnel tent uses across its arch. Kept in the vehicle, a set like this is the difference between a broken pole ending a trip and costing you ten minutes.

The poles are 7001 aluminium alloy, the aviation-grade alloy used for good tent frames, with a gold anodised finish that is a surface treatment rather than paint. Because the sections fold down, a 3.5 m pole travels as a short bundle in the supplied sleeve.

Key Features

  • 7001 aluminium alloy, gold anodised
  • 8.5 mm pole section, the common size on large tent frames
  • Sections threaded on an internal elastic cord, so they spring together in the right order
  • Assembles to roughly 3.5 m per pole
  • Supplied as a pair with a carry sleeve

Who It Suits

Owners of larger family tents who want a spare set in the vehicle, and anyone replacing a frame pole that has snapped beyond what a repair sleeve will hold. They also serve as a ridge or arch pole for a tarp shelter if you rig them carefully.

Before You Buy

Pole diameters vary between tents, and 8.5 mm is common but not universal. Measure across the end of one of your existing pole sections with a ruler before ordering, or bring the broken pole into the shop and we will match both the diameter and the assembled length.

Questions

Good to know

Is this a telescopic pole I can stand up to hold a tarp?

No, and this is the thing to be clear about. It is a sectioned frame pole, the kind that arches over a tent. If you want a straight upright for a tarp or an awning, the four-section galvanised canopy poles are the product you want.

Will it fit my tent?

Measure the diameter across the end of one of your existing pole sections. If it is 8.5 mm you are in the right place. Tents also differ in total arch length, so check that against the 3.5 m figure, or bring the old pole to the shop.

Why is it sold in a pair?

Tent frames use poles in matching pairs, and a spare set is more useful than a single pole. It also means you can cannibalise sections if one part is damaged.

Can I cut it to length?

Aluminium pole sections can be cut with a hacksaw and deburred, but you lose the ferrule on that section. It is a last resort rather than a plan.

How do I store it?

In its sleeve, dry, laid flat or gently coiled. Do not leave a pole under tension for months, and do not store it damp on the coast.

What if it bends rather than breaks?

A gentle bow can often be worked back by hand. A sharp kink is a weak point that will fail again at the same place, so replace that section.

Does the elastic shock cord run through it?

Yes. The sections are threaded on an internal elastic cord, so they spring into line and no single section can go missing in the grass.

What else should I carry for pole failures?

A pack of repair sleeves for a clean break in the field, and this set at home or in the vehicle for anything worse.
