Highlights

A leather palm at a club price

The first thing that goes when a keeping glove is built to a price is the leather palm, replaced with PVC. In a hot, humid climate that is the worst possible saving - the palm is where the ball lands and where your hands sweat. This one keeps the leather.

All-leather palm

Real leather where the ball lands, with a rubber grip facing over it.

Natural cup and palm

A pre-formed pocket, so the glove presents a cup for the ball rather than needing to be closed around it.

PVC back and cuffs, cloth lining

Protection on the back of the hand, lined for comfort.

Four sizes

Small junior, junior, youth and adult.

About this product

Club Wicket Keeping Gloves – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

The SG Club is a wicketkeeping glove built with natural cup-and-palm construction and an all-leather palm.

Cup-and-palm is the construction detail worth understanding. A keeping glove has a pre-formed cup shape sewn into the palm, so the glove naturally sits open with a pocket in it. The ball arrives and settles into that pocket rather than having to be trapped by closing the hands around it. The alternative – a flat glove with no formed cup – requires the keeper to do all the work, and balls bounce out of it.

The leather palm is the other specification that matters, and it is the first thing cheaper gloves drop. A leather palm with a rubber grip facing over it holds a ball when your hands are wet. A PVC palm goes slick as you sweat, and a keeper who cannot grip is a keeper who drops catches. In Dar es Salaam humidity that is not a marginal effect.

The webbing between thumb and index finger is the part that fails first on any keeping glove – it takes the load every time a ball is taken one-handed. Check it regularly and have it restitched before it tears through.

Wear proper inners: chamois or padded cotton, not thin ones. A keeper takes several hundred deliveries into the hands in a session, and the inner is what stands between that and your palms.

Questions

Good to know

What is cup-and-palm construction?

The two ways a keeping glove is built. A natural cup-and-palm glove has a pre-formed cup shape sewn into the palm so the glove sits open and ready, and the ball settles into it. It is the traditional and generally preferred construction - the alternative, a flat glove, has to be closed by the hands rather than presenting a pocket.

Do I need inner gloves under keeping gloves?

Yes, always, and chamois or padded cotton inners rather than thin ones. A keeper takes several hundred deliveries into the hands in a session, and the inner is what absorbs that. It also soaks up the sweat that would otherwise destroy the glove-s lining, and unlike the gloves it can be washed.

Leather or PVC palm - does it matter?

Considerably, in this climate. A leather palm keeps its grip when your hands are wet with sweat; a PVC one goes slick. For a keeper taking hundreds of balls in a humid session, that is the difference between holding catches and dropping them.

Which part of a keeping glove wears out first?

The webbing between thumb and index finger. It takes the load every time a ball is taken one-handed, and it tears rather than wearing gradually. Check it regularly and have it restitched before it goes through.

Does a keeper need a helmet?

Standing up to the stumps, yes - a deflection off the bat arrives with no reaction time. Standing back, most keepers do not. Many governing bodies now require helmets for keepers standing up in junior cricket.

How do I stop keeping gloves smelling?

Take them out of the bag the moment you get home, pull the inners out, and let both dry in the shade with the gloves opened up. Keeping gloves are the worst item in a cricket bag for this, because they are wet inside after every session. In this humidity a closed bag ruins them within weeks.

How should protective equipment fit?

Snug enough that it does not move when you do, loose enough not to restrict you. Pads should let you run; gloves should let you grip without gaps at the fingertips; a helmet should not rock when you shake your head. Kit that moves on impact is protecting the wrong place at the wrong moment.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
