Highlights

Hard shells where a ball actually breaks fingers

The two fingers most often broken in cricket are the index and middle finger of the bottom hand, jammed against the bat handle when a ball lifts. Soft rolls spread that impact; a hard TPU shell stops it. That is why the good gloves put shells on exactly those two fingers.

TPU shells on the first two bottom-hand fingers

Hard plates where a jammed ball lands, rather than soft padding alone.

Leather palm

Grips the handle properly and lasts. Synthetic palms go slippery when wet.

Cotton-filled finger rolls

The traditional padding, which spreads impact and stays flexible.

Sponge-padded mesh back with nylon gussets

Ventilated across the back of the hand, which matters in this heat.

About this product

Sg League Batting Gloves – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

The SG League is a mid-range batting glove with a leather palm and hard TPU shells on the bottom hand.

Broken fingers in cricket are not random. The two most commonly injured are the index and middle finger of the bottom hand – the hand lower on the handle, facing the bowler. When a ball lifts off a length and jams into the handle, those fingers are squeezed between ball and bat. Cotton rolls spread the impact; a hard TPU shell over them stops it reaching the bone. That is precisely why good gloves put rigid plates on those two fingers and softer padding elsewhere, and why the two gloves in a pair are not mirror images.

The palm is leather, which matters more in this climate than in a cool one. A leather palm grips a bat handle when your hands are wet with sweat; a synthetic palm goes slick and the bat starts turning in your hands, which is dangerous as well as annoying.

The back is sponge-padded mesh with nylon gussets between the fingers. Ventilation on the back of a batting glove is not a luxury in Dar es Salaam – a closed-back glove becomes a sealed, wet environment within a few overs.

Questions

Good to know

Why is the bottom hand padded more heavily?

Because of where it sits. On a bat handle the bottom hand faces the bowler, and a ball that jams into the handle or lifts off a length hits those fingers first. That is why good gloves put extra shells or rolls on the lower-hand fingers and why the two gloves in a pair are not identical.

Do batting gloves come in left and right hand versions?

Yes - a pair is made for a right-handed or a left-handed batsman, not interchangeable. The protection is heaviest on the fingers of the bottom hand, because that is the hand facing the bowler on the bat handle. Wearing the wrong pair puts the reinforcement on the wrong fingers. Tell us which you bat.

How should batting gloves fit?

Snug, with about half a centimetre of space at the fingertips. Gloves that are too big slide on the handle and dull your feel for the bat; too small and your fingers press against the end, which is exactly where a ball hits. Try them holding a bat rather than with an open hand.

Leather or synthetic palm?

Leather, in this climate. A leather palm keeps its grip when your hands are wet with sweat; a synthetic one goes slick and the bat turns in your hands. That is a safety point as much as a comfort one.

What are TPU shells?

Hard thermoplastic plates over the padding on the fingers most likely to be struck. They spread and resist an impact that soft padding alone would only cushion. On a batting glove they are the difference between a bruise and a break.

Do gloves need inner gloves?

Most players use cotton inners. They absorb sweat, which keeps the glove-s own lining from rotting, and they can be washed while the gloves cannot. In this humidity they are close to essential.

How do I look after protective gear in this climate?

Take it out of the bag the moment you get home and let it dry in the shade. Padding and straps that stay damp in a closed kit bag grow mould and rot within weeks here - far faster than the equipment wears out from use. This is the single thing that decides how long cricket kit lasts in Tanzania.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
