Highlights

A thumb button breaks the punch

Index-finger releases teach most archers to slap the trigger the instant the pin crosses the gold, which is the single biggest cause of inconsistent groups. A thumb release sits in the hand differently and is far harder to punch, so the shot goes off when it is ready rather than when you flinch.

CNC aluminium body

Machined rather than cast, so the geometry is consistent and the release does the same thing every time.

Stainless steel jaw

The part that holds the D-loop and takes the entire load - stainless is what keeps it working.

Adjustable trigger sensitivity

Set it heavy while you learn and lighter as your technique settles.

Four-finger handle

The larger handle rotates in the hand for back-tension shooting, which is what a thumb release is for.

About this product

Bow Thumb Release Aid – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

The TP420 is Topoint-s thumb release: a four-finger handle machined from aluminium, with a stainless steel jaw that grips the D-loop and a thumb barrel in place of an index-finger trigger.

The reason to move to one is technique rather than comfort. With a wrist-strap index release, almost everyone eventually develops target panic – the pin drifts towards the middle and the finger slaps the trigger before it gets there. You cannot see yourself doing it and it is extremely difficult to unlearn. A thumb release changes the geometry: the handle sits across the fingers, the thumb rests on the barrel, and the shot is executed by rotating the hand and increasing back tension rather than by pressing anything. It is much harder to punch, which is exactly the point.

Machining matters here more than on most accessories. A release is a small mechanism holding a great deal of stored energy, and it has to let go at precisely the same load every time. A CNC-machined body and a stainless jaw give consistency that a cast release does not.

The trigger sensitivity adjusts, which is worth using properly. Set it fairly heavy while you are learning the motion, so it cannot fire before you mean it to, then lighten it as your form settles and you want the release to break with less input.

It is a compound-bow accessory – it clips onto a D-loop on the string. Note it is sold in three-finger and four-finger versions and several colours; this is the four-finger black.

Buying a Bow Thumb Release Aid in Tanzania

361 Degrees Adventure keeps the bow thumb release aid at our showroom in Upanga, Dar es Salaam, with delivery countrywide across Tanzania. Come and handle it before you buy, or order online and collect.

Every bow thumb release aid is checked in store before it leaves us, and our staff use the same kit in the field, so you get an honest answer on fit and sizing rather than a sales pitch.

Not sure which bow thumb release aid suits you? Call or message the showroom and we will talk you through the options that are actually in stock in Dar es Salaam.

Spare parts and replacements for the bow thumb release aid are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Questions

Good to know

Why use a thumb release instead of a wrist strap?

Because it is much harder to punch. Index-finger releases teach most archers to slap the trigger as the pin crosses the middle, which wrecks groups and is hard to unlearn. A thumb release is executed by rotating the hand and building back tension instead.

Do I need a D-loop on my bow?

Yes. A thumb release clips to a D-loop - a short loop of serving material tied above and below the nock on the string. If your bow does not have one it needs fitting before you can use this release.

How should I set the trigger sensitivity?

Heavy at first, so it cannot fire before you intend, then progressively lighter as your technique settles. A very light trigger on an archer still learning the motion causes surprise shots, which is worse than a heavy one.

Can I use it with a recurve?

No. A release aid is a compound accessory. Recurve archers shoot with fingers on a tab or glove - it is both the tradition and the rule in recurve competition.

Is it right- or left-handed?

It suits both. Tell us which you shoot and we will set it up accordingly.

Is the four-finger version better than the three-finger?

Neither is better - it is hand size and preference. A four-finger handle is larger and fills a big hand, giving more to rotate against. Someone with smaller hands often finds three fingers more controllable.

How do I look after it?

Keep it dry and keep grit out of the jaw mechanism. A drop of light oil on the moving parts occasionally is all it needs. Never carry it loose in a pocket with keys and coins - grit in the jaw is what makes a release fire inconsistently.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
